I found Alexander Troup’s beautiful Cluny Castle air last year whilst searching for J. Scott Skinner tunes. When we got the opportunity to perform with Strathspey and Surreal Society at Celtic Connections 2017 again this tune came to me as the basis of my concerto for fiddler Patsy Reid.
When I write a concerto I aim to make it hard to show off the virtuosity of Scottish musicians. I know how great they are but sometimes we don’t get the credit we deserve! Patsy Reid did a fabulous job of playing this piece and I’m very proud of it. You can listen to it below and download the score here.
